How car transport is priced

We don't use a one-size price list for car transport, because no two moves are the same. A short run from Corby to a garage in Kettering and a collection from the far end of the country need very different amounts of time and fuel.

Instead, every job gets a fixed price before it's booked. Once you agree it, that is what you pay for the move as described. No surprises on delivery day.

What affects the cost of car transport

FactorWhy it mattersEffect on price
DistanceCollection to delivery, plus the truck's journey to the collection point and backThe biggest factor. Longer moves cost more
Vehicle size and weightA city car, a large 4x4 and a 3.5 tonne van load and carry differentlyBigger and heavier vehicles can cost more
Runner or non-runnerNon-runners are winched on and off, and may need dollies or skatesAdds loading time, so can add to the price
Access at each endNarrow lanes, low car parks, gated sites or a car buried in a garageDifficult access adds time
TimingFlexible dates let us plan routes and combine workFlexible dates can help. Urgent same-day moves depend on truck availability
Low or prestige carsNeed extra care at loading and unloadingExtra time where needed
StorageHolding a car in our secure yard between collection and deliveryPriced separately when needed

What's included in the price

  • Collection from the address you give us
  • Loading and securing the vehicle on a beavertail transporter
  • Transport, with the vehicle riding on the bed, wheels off the road
  • Unloading and handover at the delivery address
  • Goods in transit insurance while the vehicle is with us

Our transport is open, not enclosed. Open transport is how the vast majority of cars are moved and keeps costs sensible.

How to get an accurate price

Send us these details by phone, WhatsApp on 07598 314366 or the contact form:

  • Collection postcode and delivery postcode
  • Make, model and registration
  • Whether it runs, steers and brakes
  • Any modifications, such as lowered suspension or a wide body
  • Access notes at both ends
  • When it needs to move, and whether the date is flexible
  • For auctions, any collection deadline and release details

With that information we can give you a firm fixed price. If something important is missed, such as a car that turns out not to run, the price may need revisiting, so it pays to be accurate.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Be flexible on the date. It gives us the chance to plan the route around other work.
  • Make the car easy to reach. Move other cars out of the way and clear the garage if you can.
  • Tell us if it runs. A car that drives on is quicker to load than one that needs winching.
  • Have someone at each end. A wasted trip because nobody is there to hand over the keys costs everyone time.
  • Move two together. Some trucks can carry one car and tow a second on a dolly, which may suit two cars going to the same place.
  • Book ahead for auctions. Late collections can lead to storage charges from the auction site.

Is it cheaper to transport a car or drive it?

For short distances with a healthy, road-legal car, driving yourself is usually cheaper. Transport tends to make more sense when:

  • The car has no MOT or tax
  • It doesn't run or isn't reliable
  • It's a classic, prestige or low car
  • The distance is long and you would need train fares, fuel and time off work
  • You need two cars moved with only one driver

Common car transport jobs and how they're priced

Each type of move has its own things to think about, which is why we ask questions before giving a price.

  • Auction collections. The price depends on where the auction site is and where the car is going. Auctions often set a collection deadline, and missing it can lead to storage charges from the site, so book early.
  • Private sale pick-ups. Distance is the main factor. We also need to know the seller will be there with the keys, and that the car is paid for and released to you.
  • Garage and MOT runs. Usually short local moves, sometimes there and back. Tell us if the car needs bringing home again so both legs are priced together.
  • Dealer deliveries. Priced on distance, with business invoicing available for regular work.
  • Classic and prestige cars. Priced like any other move, with extra time allowed for careful loading of low or valuable cars.
  • House moves. A car going to a new address, often a long way. Flexibility on the date helps.
  • Non-runners and project cars. Winching and, if needed, dollies and skates add loading time at each end.

Why the cheapest quote isn't always the best value

When comparing car transport quotes, check what is actually included. Ask whether the vehicle is insured in transit, whether the firm is using its own trucks or passing the job on, and whether the price is fixed or just a guide. A low guide price that rises on the day is not a saving.

With us, the price is fixed for the job as described, goods in transit insurance is included, and the move is done on our own transporters. We are also PAS 43 accredited and ISO 9001 certified.

Trade and business pricing

Garages, dealers and fleets that need regular moves can ask about business invoicing. Tell us roughly how often you need vehicles moving and where, and we can talk through how best to price it.

Paying for car transport

Pay by card, bank transfer or cash. We confirm payment arrangements when you book. Businesses can arrange invoicing.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to transport a car?

It depends on distance, the vehicle, whether it runs, access and timing. Send us the postcodes and vehicle details and we give you a fixed price before you book.

Is the price fixed?

Yes. You get a fixed price for the move as described before booking. It only changes if the details turn out to be different, such as a car that doesn't run.

Do you charge more for non-runners?

Non-runners take longer to load and unload, so they can cost more. Tell us when you ask for a price so it's included.

Is insurance included?

Yes. Every vehicle is covered by goods in transit insurance while it's in our care.

Do you offer enclosed transport?

No. Our transport is open, which suits most cars and keeps the cost sensible.

Is it cheaper to drive the car myself?

For short distances with a road-legal car, usually yes. For long distances, non-runners or cars without MOT or tax, transport is often better value.

How do I pay for car transport?

By card, bank transfer or cash. Businesses can ask about invoicing.
