What is my scrap car worth?

There is no single price for a scrap car, because the value depends on the vehicle and the scrap market at the time. What we can tell you is exactly how the price is worked out, so you know the offer is fair.

You pay nothing for collection. Collection is free, and we pay you for the vehicle by bank transfer.

Why scrap prices go up and down

Scrap vehicle prices follow the market for metals, which changes regularly. A quote from a few months ago may not be the same today. We give you a current price based on your vehicle when you ask, and we explain what it's based on.

How to get an accurate price

Send these details by phone, WhatsApp on 07598 314366 or the contact form:

  • Registration, make, model and mileage
  • Whether it runs, rolls and steers
  • Any accident damage
  • Whether anything is missing, such as wheels, engine parts or the catalytic converter
  • Photos of the outside and, if possible, under the bonnet
  • Where it is parked and any access issues
  • Whether you have the V5C logbook

The more accurate the description, the more reliable the price. If the vehicle turns out to be missing major parts that weren't mentioned, the price may need adjusting on the day, and we explain why before anything is loaded.

Ways to get the best price

  • Keep the car complete. Removing parts to sell separately usually lowers the scrap price.
  • Be accurate about condition. It avoids the price changing on collection day.
  • Have the paperwork ready. The V5C or proof of ID keeps the collection simple.
  • Send good photos. They help us price it properly first time.
  • Don't wait too long. A car left sitting deteriorates, and the market can move either way.

Scrapping versus selling or repairing

Before you scrap a car, it's worth weighing up the alternatives. A scrap price reflects metal and reusable parts. If the car runs, has a current MOT and only needs minor work, you may get more selling it privately or to a trader, though that takes time and effort.

If the car needs a repair that costs more than it would be worth afterwards, or has failed its MOT on structural rust, a major engine or gearbox fault, or heavy accident damage, scrapping is usually the better financial choice. It also stops the ongoing costs of insurance, tax or a SORN on a car you aren't using.

Tell us what's wrong with the vehicle when you ask for a price. We'll give you a straight figure, and you can compare it with what a garage says the repairs will cost.

Vans and motorbikes

We buy scrap vans and motorbikes as well as cars, priced on the same factors. Vans are often heavier than cars, so the metal value can be higher. Motorbikes are lighter, so make, model and reusable parts carry more weight in the price. Send the same details and photos for a quote.

Watch out for these when comparing offers

  • Cash offers. Paying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal, so a cash offer is a warning sign.
  • Collection fees taken off on the day. Ask whether collection is free before you agree.
  • Prices that drop on arrival without explanation. A fair buyer explains any change before loading.
  • No mention of an ATF or Certificate of Destruction. Without one, you could stay recorded as the keeper.
  • No licences. A legitimate collector holds a waste carrier licence and a scrap metal collector's licence.

What you don't pay for

  • Collection is free, including non-runners and cars with seized wheels
  • The vehicle goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, which issues the Certificate of Destruction
  • The ATF tells the DVLA, so you stop being the keeper

How you're paid

Scrap cars are always paid by bank transfer. The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 made it illegal to pay cash for scrap vehicles. Be wary of anyone offering cash. A transfer also gives you a clear record of the sale.

We hold a waste carrier licence and a scrap metal collector's licence.

Don't forget your road tax refund

Once the DVLA knows your vehicle has been scrapped, any full months of vehicle tax left are refunded to you automatically. That is on top of what we pay for the car. If you have a private number plate you want to keep, take it off through the DVLA's retention process before the car is scrapped.

Questions people ask

How much will I get for my scrap car?

It depends mainly on the vehicle's weight, current scrap metal prices, the make and model, and how complete it is. Send us the details and we give you a price before collection.

Why do scrap car prices vary so much?

Prices follow the scrap metal market and the value of parts, which both change over time. We give you a current price for your vehicle.

Do you charge for collecting a scrap car?

No. Collection is free, including non-runners.

Do you pay more if the car still runs?

Sometimes, if it has parts that are in demand. Tell us whether it runs when you ask for a price.

Can I be paid cash for my scrap car?

No. Paying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. We pay by bank transfer.

Will the price change on collection day?

Not if the car matches the description. If major parts are missing that weren't mentioned, we explain any change before loading.

Do I get my road tax back?

Yes. Once the DVLA knows the car is scrapped, any full months of tax left are refunded automatically.
