Scrap my car in Great Oakley: how it works
Most homes in Oakley Vale and the old village have limited parking, so a dead car on the drive soon becomes a problem. Businesses at Oakley Hay end up with the same issue when an old van is not worth repairing. Our scrap car collection takes these vehicles off your hands, legally, and pays you for them.
We buy scrap and unwanted cars, vans and motorbikes. Collection is free, and we bring the right truck or dollies to move a vehicle that has not turned a wheel in years.

What we accept
- Non-runners and cars with engine or gearbox failure.
- Cars with no MOT or no tax.
- Accident-damaged and written-off vehicles.
- Old vans and work vehicles, up to 3.5 tonnes.
- Motorbikes.
- Vehicles with no V5C logbook, as long as you can show proof of ID.
How we decide the price
The price for a scrap car is based on:
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Weight | Most of the value comes from the metal |
| Scrap metal prices | These move up and down over time |
| Make and model | Some parts are worth more than others |
| Completeness | Missing engines, catalytic converters or wheels lower the value |
| Condition | Heavy damage or stripping affects it |
Tell us these details when you call and we will give you a price. Our scrap car cost guide explains each factor in more depth.
Why payment is always by bank transfer
The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 makes it illegal to pay cash for scrap vehicles. That protects you as well as us, because there is a record of who bought the car and when. We pay by bank transfer every time, so please have your account details ready.
Licensed and above board
We hold a waste carrier licence and a scrap metal collector's licence. Every scrap vehicle we collect goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). The ATF issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA that the car has been scrapped.
Once the DVLA knows, any full months of vehicle tax left are refunded to you automatically. You do not need to apply separately.
What to have ready on collection day
- Your photo ID and proof of address.
- The V5C logbook, if you have it.
- Any keys for the vehicle.
- Your bank details for payment.
- Personal belongings removed from the car, including the boot and glovebox.
For a company van from Oakley Hay, have the business details ready too, as the vehicle will usually be registered to the firm.
Collection from tight spots
Old cars are often parked in awkward places: tucked down the side of a house, at the back of a parking court or blocked in by other cars. If a car has flat tyres or seized wheels, we use dollies and skates to move it to the truck without damaging anything around it.
Arranging a collection time
Tell us when you, or someone with ID, can be at the car. We agree a time and stick to it, and if anything changes on the day we ring ahead. Evening and weekend collections are possible, which helps if you work during the day. When we arrive we check the vehicle matches what you described, check the paperwork and ID, load it and arrange payment. If the car turns out to be very different from the description, such as missing its engine, we tell you before loading so there are no surprises.
Is it worth scrapping, or worth repairing?
If the repair bill is more than the car is worth, or an MOT failure needs expensive work, scrapping is often the sensible choice. If you are unsure, tell us what is wrong and we will give you a scrap price to compare against the garage quote. Our how to scrap a car guide walks through the full process.
Keep a copy of the Certificate of Destruction details once the ATF has processed the car. It is your proof that the vehicle has been scrapped properly and that the DVLA has been told, which matters if any letters about the car arrive later.
